A recent study by Chalmers University in Sweden revealed that a significant portion of ipe wood used in global markets may be sourced illegally. Known for its dark color and exceptional durability, ipe wood is widely used in luxury flooring and exterior finishes. The study indicated that approximately 75% of this wood could originate from unmonitored areas in Brazil.

Such practices threaten tropical forests and jeopardize fragile ecosystems. Environmental reports warn that lax enforcement allows the wood to be easily trafficked through international networks, and some certification labels used for marketing may be forged or of questionable credibility. This raises concerns among consumers and architects seeking sustainable products. The study calls for stricter oversight of supply chains to ensure the legality and sustainability of ipe wood.
